1st High-Level Meeting of AIS Forum 2023, Momentum to Make Seribu Islands a Tourism Model

Jakarta, 25 September 2023 – The 1st High-Level Meeting of Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum 2023 will become a momentum for the Special Capital Region (DKI) of Jakarta Provincial Government to promote the Seribu Islands as a pilot island-based tourism destination in the country.

The Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono stated this in Jakarta on Monday, 25 September.

The 1st High-Level Meeting of the AIS Forum is a gathering of island and archipelagic nations that will be hosted by Indonesia on 11—12 October in Nusa Dua, Bali.

A total of twenty-five heads of state or government from the island and archipelagic countries are expected to attend the meeting. One of the objectives is to discuss cooperation in enhancing the marine spatial planning conditions in their respective regions.

"Yes, all of us (Jakarta Provincial Government) support it, and some of the matter will be discussed in Bali," said Heru.

He stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government has prioritized the growth of the tourism industry, particularly island-based tourism. This is done to increase locally generated income (PAD) from tourism-related activities.

Jakarta is collaborating with all relevant agencies to increase the number and types of public transportation modes. Additionally, the city is striving to improve the facilities and infrastructure at prominent tourism destinations such as Ancol, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), and the Seribu Islands.

Based on data from the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office in 2022, the tourism sector contributed at least more than Rp500 billion to the total locally generated income (PAD) worth Rp5.29 trillion.

"Through these efforts, (PAD from the Jakarta Special Region tourism sector) will hopefully continue to grow," he said.

Previously, Muhammad Taufik Zoelkifli, a member of Commission B of the Provincial Legislative Council for the Economy of DKI Jakarta, assessed that the High-Level Meeting of the AIS Forum

2023 would be a catalyst for the DKI

Provincial Government to advance the tourism development of the Seribu Islands.

Taufik believes that tourism on the Seribu Islands could generate a high income for Jakarta if managed properly. In addition, he mentioned that Seribu Islands’s contribution of income from its tourism industry will be even more important if Jakarta loses its status as the capital city in the future.
