High-Level Meeting of AIS Forum, Indonesia’s Contribution to Address Global Maritime Issues

Jakarta, 18 September 2023 – As the initiator of the High-Level Meeting of the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum 2023, the meeting serves as Indonesia's contribution to addressing global maritime issues.

This was conveyed by Assistant Deputy for Maritime Zone Delimitation and Border Areas of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) Sora Lokita, at a Forum Merdeka Barat 9 (FMB 9) press conference on Monday, 18 September.

"This is a tangible contribution, the idea and initiative were from Indonesia. We lead and endeavor to make this a positive contribution from Indonesia to the global stage, especially in the context of maritime issues," said Sora.

He added that throughout Indonesia's history, the country has been actively involved in diplomacy related to global maritime issues through its participation in various international meetings, including drafting the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea that reaffirmed the principle of archipelagic states.

"We succeeded in realizing the principles of archipelagic states, and after that, we were involved in several discussions. However, everything was in the context of participating in a process, not creating and leading the process," said Sora.

The High-Level Meeting of the AIS Forum 2023, scheduled to take place in Bali on 11 October, can serve as a platform for Indonesia to contribute its ideas to solve the challenges faced by island and archipelagic nations.

Sora emphasized that the AIS Forum 2023 High-Level Meeting is not merely a discussion forum but will also have concrete impacts in addressing the challenges of island and archipelagic nations.

This international meeting is also expected to become a sustainable forum for island and archipelagic nations, similar to established regional organizations.

"One of the expected achievements in the upcoming meeting is how leaders will agree on the future of the AIS Forum, how our milestones in the future will turn it into a sustainable

organizational forum with a long-term activity roadmap, similar to established organizations in various regions," said Sora.

The High-Level Meeting of AIS Forum 2023 invited 51 archipelagic and island states, along with various international organizations.

Under the theme "Fostering Collaboration, Enabling Innovation for Our Ocean and Our Future," the meeting will focus on three important aspects: blue economy development, climate change challenges, and strengthening solidarity among archipelagic and island states.
