This was conveyed by the Deputy for Maritime Sovereignty and Energy of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment Jodi Mahardi in Jakarta on Monday, 5 September.
"The AIS Forum was also established to strengthen Indonesia's involvement in international forums. Indonesia’s commitment to become a strong maritime nation is demonstrated by hosting the High-Level Meeting of AIS Forum 2023," said Jodi.
Jodi also mentioned another indicator, which is an economic transformation through industrial downstreaming. Downstreaming policies encourage commodity-based industrialization with high added value, moving towards a more complex economic structure.
"Downstreaming can increase the production and added value of goods and services," he said. Furthermore, he believes that industrial downstreaming will promote more equitable investment.
Jodi gave an example that throughout 2020, the exports of nickel commodities and their derivatives were worth US$4.73 billion, an increase from US$2.59 billion in 2019. Exports reached US$7.08 billion in 2021 and US$8.7 billion as of Jan-Aug 2022.
This demonstrates that downstreaming enhances Indonesia's economic resilience. According to him, the third indicator to make Indonesia a powerful maritime nation is the achievement of clean, healthy, and productive Indonesian waters.
Based on the Indonesian Ocean Health Index (OHI) score, the condition of Indonesian waters has improved over the past three years. In 2020, the score was 73.44, then it briefly dropped to 73.06 in 2022 and rose again in 2022 to 75.65.
"The OHI data can be presented at the international level as the performance of Indonesia's maritime sector," said Jodi.
Jodi suggested that creating innovative and character-based human resources is the final indicator for the maritime sector. Through the Maritime Literacy Month (BLM) program, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment plays a role in expanding maritime literacy among young generations.
Various routine activities have been conducted over the past two years to impart knowledge about broader maritime aspects to the young generation. (Moch Mardiansyah Al Afghani/Imam Budilaksono/Elvira Inda Sari/Irvina Falah/Wisnu Wardoyo)
